EU maintains UK's 48+ hour week
Sales jobs employees will be able to continue to work for longer than 48 hours per week following a meeting of European employment ministers yesterday.
According to the Trades Union Congress, more than 3.3 million people in the UK currently work more than the standard 48 hours set by the EU.
This figure increased by 180,000 during the first three months of the year alone.
The exemption vote by EU Member States was heralded as a "fair deal for workers" by business secretary John Hutton.
He said: "Flexibility has been critical to our ability to create an extra three million jobs over the past decade.
"That flexibility has been preserved by ensuring workers can continue to have choice over their working hours in future years."
However, there is set to be a review of the opt out within the next eight years, which could result in businesses forced into more sales recruitment drives if restrictions are placed on the number of hours one person can work.
