Sales jobs 'satisfy' if workers' talents used

Staff in sales jobs "will be satisfied" with occupations which use their talents properly, a trade union leader suggests.

Nigel Stanley, the head of campaigns at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) says employees who are dissatisfied with their jobs are less likely to put up with increases in workload or restricted opportunities.

Statistics released by the TUC show 24 per cent are unhappy with their occupations at the moment.

Mr Stanley notes rising unemployment means workers are putting up with more but this may only last as long as jobs are scarce.

He claims those whose employment gives them an element of control over their work and pays them fairly for it, as in sales jobs, motivates the most.

"People will generally be satisfied with jobs that use their talents properly, give them autonomy over how they do it and a chance to develop new skills," he adds.

Research conducted by GfK NOP found nearly half of those who say they work for a disengaged manager will leave as soon as they can.
