PM: Skills training 'vital for UK firms'

Prime minister Gordon Brown has called on UK employers to improve the skills of their workforces through retraining.

Speaking at the annual CBI conference in London, Mr Brown called on firms to invest in staff in order to help bring the UK economy through the tough current climate.

He went on to say that increasing global competition means British businesses should ensure their employees are as highly qualified as possible.

"Even if there had been no cyclical rise in unemployment, all of us would have to deal with the consequences of a more specialist international division of labour and the resulting restructuring of jobs," Mr Brown continued.

He added that this means investing in the new talents and skills required for the technological and creative industries.

Last week, the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills announced the Learning and Skills Council will receive £12 million to boost employment training.

Commenting on the decision, secretary of state John Denham said people facing redundancy should know colleges will be there to help them with advice, support, education and training.
