Public sector jobs 'increasing in popularity'

Public sector employment is viewed as more attractive than work for private companies in the current uncertain economic climate, it has been revealed.

Gerwyn Davies, public policy adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), said that following the recent Pre-Budget Report, public sector organisations will be able to benefit from borrowing unavailable to private firms.

She added: "Above all there are more opportunities and there is no doubt that public sector employment has gone up in the most recent quarter and that's against the background of a big increase in unemployment."

Ms Davies went on to say the shift is representative of a cycle which saw private sector average wages above those of public workers last year.

The autumn 2008 Labour Market Outlook by the CIPD found 75 per cent of organisations are planning to recruit in the next three months, down from 81 per cent in summer 2008, while 26 per cent of organisations surveyed are planning to make redundancies in the next three months.
