BERR 'targets illegal recruitment agencies'

The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) is rooting out rogue recruitment agencies in the UK, it has been revealed.

According to the body, its most notable achievements in the last year included ensuring that an airport worker at Heathrow received over £1,000 that their agency had wrongly withheld and banning an agency owner in Stoke on Trent whose employee had fallen asleep at the wheel and killed a cyclist due to driving for excessive hours.

Employment Minister Pat McFadden said that BERR does not want to see reputable and legal agencies undercut by those who break the law.

"I'm pleased at the success of the inspectorate in cracking down on agencies that flout the law and protecting vulnerable workers, but there is still more to do," he commented.

Earlier this week, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development claimed public sector employment is viewed as more attractive than working for private companies in the current uncertain economic climate.
