Jobseekers 'encounter age discrimination'
Age discrimination continues to be an issue in employee recruitment despite legislation designed to stamp out the prejudice, it has been claimed.
Writing on HR Zone, recruitment specialist Dianne Bown-Wilson stated that the media is increasing its attention on the problems that employers are likely to create for themselves through an over-reliance on Generation X and Y employees.
She continued: "Age stereotypes such as older individuals' inflexibility, inability to learn, lack of IT skills and ill health are all increasingly being denounced as both untrue and unfounded."
Ms Bown-Wilson went on to say older people are not currently being recruited proportionately to their numbers in the population and their eligibility for work despite this, adding that many job specifications mean that older candidates will automatically be excluded or eliminated.
This week, marketing expert Mary Donato commented that employment seekers looking for sales positions should manage their job search to ensure they stand out from the crowd.
