Female sales jobs applicants 'should dress well'

Female candidates applying for sales jobs should ensure they dress well, although this can present applicants with additional difficulties.

Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, says it is important to adhere to the conventions governing dress in the particular company, whether this is relatively relaxed or more formal.

He says: "It is better to be smarter than not, it's easier to scale down an outfit rather than get it wrong by being too casual and not feeling as confident."

Interview performance can be boosted by the extra self-esteem being well dressed can provide, he states.

Mr Huxham says that women have a more difficult dress code to predict than men, as for male applicants a suit, shirt and tie are usually sufficient.

Recent research by Travelodge found that the average annual spend on a work wardrobe was £417.47 for men and £343.67 for women, with 60 per cent of females choosing a trouser suit for when they need to dress to impress.
