Sales recruitment hopes rise among SMEs 'a positive sign'

The number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) taking on extra staff before Christmas has been described as a "positive development".

Despite the current economic climate, almost 20 per cent of SMEs expect to increase their sales recruitment efforts over the next two months; compared to one in ten businesses that plan to make redundancies.

In a report due to be published this week, the Santander Corporate Group has discovered that just over 1,000 SMEs will add more staff to their ranks.

A spokesperson from the Federation of Small Businesses said that despite this positive development, there is still hard work to be done in sales recruitment.

"Our research shows that half of small businesses without employees are keen to employ in the future but 34 per cent of members found Jobcentre Plus 'ineffective' or 'very ineffective'," the representative added.

The Santander report will also show that businesses generating a £1 million to £5 million turnover show the highest likelihood of recruiting more staff.
