Sloppy appearance can ruin interview chances

Turning up to an interview in a scruffy outfit could ruin a candidate's chances, according to one HR expert, who says looking smart is a minimum requirement.

Career counsellor Cheryl Morgan said that although an applicant's skills and experience are important, appearance is still something which can heavily influence an interviewer's perception of a candidate.

"Your appearance is important at interview as it's the first impression that your potential employer has of you. If you look like you haven't made an effort then it might call into question whether you apply the same effort to your work," she stated.

People trying to get sales jobs should take note of the advice and the expert added that some companies might have a handbook including a section on dress code, which applicants should reference before an interview.

One leading figure from industry who believes interview techniques are evolving as competition increases is business mogul James Caan, who told the Daily Telegraph he felt candidates needed to review their approach.
